Inaugural Session of the “ICON 2016”-Three days International Conference on “Emerging Strides in Innovations and Skill Development: A Sustainable Perspective” @ SMS Varanasi
The three day International Conference entitled “Emerging strides in innovations and skill development: A sustainable perspective” organized by School of Management Sciences (SMS) Varanasi in association with California State University, USA, Claflin University USA, Eastern UP Exporters’ Association (EUPEA), PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI) and Varanasi Management Association (VMA) was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri GK Pillai (MD & CEO Walchand Nagar Industries) with Prof. S. K. Kak (Former Vice Chancellor MMTU-Noida), Prof. Ashish Chandra (University of Houston, Texas, USA), Prof. B. P. Singh (Former-Head & Dean, Delhi School of Economics), Dr. M. P. Singh (Executive Secretary-SMS Varanasi), Dr. K. S. Mishra (Prof.-SMS Varanasi), Prof. R. K. Singh (Prof.-SMS Varanasi) amidst a huge gathering of more than 250 delegates. These delegates were from different parts of India and outside India.
Session started with garlanding the statue of goddess Saraswati and ligting the lamp. Director of SMS Varanasi Prof. P. N. Jha delivered welcome address and expressed his thankfulness to all the guests and particpants for partcipitaning in Inaugural session of ICON-2016. He spoke about objectives of conference and informed the audience about achievements of SMS Varanasi on different platforms. He has specifically mentioned that SMS Varanasi holdsrank amongst Top-50 B-School of India. He discussed about the importance of skill development and need of creativity in overall development of country. He also emphasised upon the value based development for betterment of all the stakeholders of society. He appreciated the skill development initiatives by Government and said that India is among Top-5 start-up countries.
Prof. Ashish Chandra, University of Houston, Texas, USA said that every person present in the conference has potential to become CEO. He compiled his deleberation under two headings- Friend and Enemy. He said a person himself can be his best friend or worst enemy. An individual’s good qualities are his friends and bad qualities are enemies. He suggested that an individual should always try to come out of his comfort zone then only success can be achieved. He suggested to become good corporate citizen as well as global citizen.
Prof. B. P. Singh, Former-Head & Dean, Delhi School of Economics spoke on relationship among the factors- Population of youth in India, Status of high unemployment and Entrepreneurial possibilities thorugh skill development in India. He said that by working on skill development we can make millions of youth of India employable and a kind of sustainability can be developed. He shared the data that skilled workforce in India is only 2% whereas in South korea this is 96% and in Japan it is close to 80%. India holds 76th position in the listof 134 countries in the world.
In his deliberation Mr. G. k. Pillai, MD & CEO Walchand Nagar Industries, also emphasised on need of innovation and skill development. He talked about the requirement of leaders in different domains of innovation and skill development. He clarified that innovation can be done by leaders only and not managers. He spoke that India has immense potential for industrial base and skilled workforce. We need to innovate all the processes for increasing their effectiveness. Skill development can be attained thorugh rigorous discipline. Everyperson can innovate in their own area. Innovation can be acquired through passion in concerned area.
In his Presidential address, Prof. S. K. Kak, Former Vice Chancellor MMTU-Noida, said that his generation has high hopes, expectations and demands from Indian youth. He emphasised that only high production level and innovation in processes can not make our country, but becoming good human being is more important. He suggested on developing positive attitude is utmost requirement for overall progress. Mere enhancement of technology is not sufficient. He raised the questions on our schooling system as well. He said that now-a-days information gets obsolete very fast, so in place of gathering information we should focus on learning skills. He should develop ability to understand, learn and innovate.
The Conference theme was presented by Prof. RK Singh while the vote-of-thanks was given by Prof K.S. Mishra. Guests released the Conference Souvenir.
The entire Conference is divided into four plenary and five technical sessions. The other eminent speakers who are joining the Conference proceedings include Prof. K. B. Gupta (IIM-Lucknow), Prof. B. P. Singh (Former Head & Dean, Delhi School of Economics), Mr. Sanjay Singhal (Founder & Principal Consultant, Strategizers), Mr. Praphull Mishra (MD & CEO, Netcarrots.com), Prof. P. K. Mishra (IIT-BHU), Prof A. K. Mittal (IIT-Kanpur), Mr. D. K. Srivastava (ED-QCFI) and Dr. Ashok Rai (President QCFI Varanasi Chapter).
The Valedictory address would be given by Prof. Prithvish Nag (VC-Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith) on Monday. The participants are from different places in India including places like Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu besides Varanasi and several locations outside India which includes USA, Middle-east countries and Sri Lanka.
Independence Day is the festival for entire India and celebrated to remember its freedom from British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation on 15th August 1947. Sixty ninth anniversary of India’s Independence, on 15th August, 2015, School of Management Sciences celebrated the most pious and auspicious occasion with zeal and enthusiasm. Prof. P. N. Jha, Director of SMS Varanasi, executed the activity of flag hoisting on behalf of whole SMS family.
He presented his tribute towards the leaders of the freedom struggle of India. He discussed the importance of independence and suggested the students to be cautious about the safeguarding of our independence. He further recommended that we should generally prefer goods and services offered by India Companies. In this manner we can provide strength to our economy. He has expressed his thankfulness towards Indian defense services for safeguarding Indian boundaries. He congratulated the facult members, staff and students on such blissful and memorable moment.
Several other activities also took place including plantation activity under guidance of Director Prof. P. N. Jha, Registrar Mr. Sanjay Gupta along with senior faculty and staff members.
Cultural programs had also been presented by students of BBA, BCA, B.Com PGDM, MBA & MCA batches.
Students had presented series of programs on various themes related to India’s Independence. Cultural events were coordinated by faculty and staff members with Mrs. Pallavi Pathak, Assistant Professor of the institute. At the end of the programme snacks were given to students and staff members
Two day Intra-Institute sports competition began at SMS on 27th Feb 2015 with high euphoria, zeal and verve among the students as well as the faculty and staff members of the SMS fraternity.
Inaugurating the Sports Fest 2015 Chief Guest Dr. Bhagwan Rai, Regional Sports Officer-Varanasi said that it is good to see professional students embracing sports because sports helps in developing good physical and mental health besides quick decision making.
He further added that sports not only helps in building the physical strength but also inculcates the sportsman spirit and the team spirit which is indispensable part in any walk of life be it academics or corporate.
Present on the occasion were Mr. Ramakant Rai, Former National Level Athlete, Mr.Chandrashekhar Mishra, Referee Volleyball, Mr.Chandrakesh Mishra, Referee Volleyball and Mr.Surendra Singh, Umpire and former state level cricketer.
The Sports Fest 2015 was declared open by Dr.Bhagwan Rai by the beat of the drum and igniting the ceremonial flame.
The program began with the March Past Parade of the participating teams of the post-graduate and undergraduate courses. It was followed by the pledge taking ceremony where the pledge was administered by Ms. Swati Tiwari
Earlier welcoming the guests Prof. P.N.Jha, Director, SMS said that healthy mind resides in a healthy body and therefore such sports activities are inevitable. It not only provides good health but sharpens the mental ability and agility too.
At the beginning of the event the honorable Chief Guest was felicitated with a memento by Prof P.N Jha, Director SMS Varanasi. Present on the occasion were Shri Sanjay Gupta, Registrar, SMS Varanasi along with entire SMS Family.
Day 1 of the Sports Fest witnessed various league matches in Cricket, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Chess, Carom and Tug of War.
The qualifiers from today’s league matches will meet tomorrow for their respective Semi-finals and Finals.
Day 2 of the Sport Fest 2015 witnessed the semi finals and finals of the various events.

At the end of the Sport Fest 2015 aforesaid winners were awarded with the trophies by Prof.P.N Jha,Director SMS,Varanasi.
During her interaction with budding managers she focused on inculcation of soft skills like confidence and Respect for others. She also advocated on the development of Team Management and Coordination practices for the future managers to cope up with dynamic corporate culture.
Apart from her delivery on soft skills, she also shared her rich corporate global experience with the students. Speaking on INNOVATIONS she shared her real time product launching experiences in India and across the globe too.

A delegation of 60 research scholars and along with their senior faculty members and director visited School, Of Management Science Varanasi on 5th December 2014.They visited campus to have an interactive session on “GOVERNANCE STUDY PROGRAMME ON RIVER GANGES AND IT’S CLEAN UP MISSION”.
Dignitaries present on the dais were Dr.Wu Xun (Director, Institute of Water Policy, Singapore),Dr.Ora-orn Poocharoen (Professor, University of Singapore),Er .Amitabh (President, Eastern UP Exporter’s Association),Mr.Sandeep Singh (Associate Professor ,SMS Varanasi) and Mr.Kartikey Singh (Assistant Professor, SMS Varanasi)
During his inaugural address Er.Amitabh extended a very welcome to the delegates and the scholars. He further focused on the initiatives being taken by the government for Ganga Clean Up Mission.
During his presentation on “Ganges and Spiritual Dimensions of Varanasi” Prof Sandeep Singh focused on the history of Varanasi and River Ganges. He depicted the religious importance of the river and it’s relation to the city. During his deliberation he also emphasized on the importance of Dharma, Artha Kama, and Moksha and how these aspect of life can be associated with the city (Varanasi) and river Ganges.
During his Presentation on “Handloom and Handicraft Industry” Prof.Kartikeya Singh focused on the prevailing condition of Handloom as well as power loom industry with special reference to Varanasi. He also emphasized on the policies of Indian Government to tackle the grievances of above mentioned causes.
Finally in the last presentation on “Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Models for Industries along the Ganges” Prof.Raj Kumar Singh primarily discussed the issues related to pollution of river Ganges and the measures to overcome it. He further focused on how sustainable business models can be implemented in the present prevailing condition of Varanasi.
Lastly Dr.Wu Xun and Dr.Ora shared their views on the session and appreciated the efforts of the student’s of SMS Varanasi and institute itself in the Ganga Clean Up Mission.
At the end of the session delegates explored the campus of SMS, Varanasi along with interaction with the students of the institute. They admired the green lush infrastructure and the intellectual level of the students.

A work shop on Investor Awareness was organized by Security Exchange Board Of India (SEBI) at SMS, Varanasi on 14th Nov 2012 for MBA 3rd and PGDM 3rd Semester students. Work shop focused on providing the investors with the knowledge of investments and to safeguard them from illegal schemes. Dignitaries present on the occasion were Mr.Naveen Sharma (AGM-SEBI,Lucknow) and Mr.Arun Kumar Shukla (Manager SEBI,Lucknow).
The session specifically focused on safeguarding the investor’s interest against Ponzi schemes which are not registered with SEBI and are treated illegal. Guidance was provided to the young management professional to be a smart and educated investor.
School of Management Sciences (SMS), Varanasi completed its 19 years of existence on November 10, 2014. The Institution celebrated its 20th Foundation Day “Adharshila” amidst joyous fervor and competitive spirit with over 15 teams participating in the day long competitive events covering four events in academic and cultural arenas. A traditional ‘puja’ was performed at the Campus in the early morning hours before the arrival of the Chief Guest. The Chief Guest in the inaugural session was Shri Narad Rai, Hon’ble Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, Uttar Pradesh Government, Lucknow.
Inaugurating the day-long event “Adharshila 2014” at SMS Campus, Shri Narad Rai, Hon’ble Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, Uttar Pradesh Government, Lucknow said that students should prepare themselves to take on the world market instead of inviting them to our country. One should think of staying in India and serving the citizens by acquiring a career from institution like School of Management Sciences (SMS), Varanasi.
The presidential address was made by Dr. O. P. Kejriwal, Former Information Commissioner of India, who said that management skills are required everywhere. There should be a balance between personal life and career and hence the students must manager their lives in such a way that it is meaningful.
Welcoming the Guests to the function, the Director of SMS, Varanasi, Prof. P. N. Jha said that it is a momentous occasion for the entire SMS family and it is only due to the well wishes of all its stake holders from time to time owing to which SMS has made a mark at the international level.
He welcomed the Chief Guest to the Campus and hoped that under his stewardship, not only the U. P. Technical University but also SMS family would perform excellently in providing value based education. He remembered the strong foundation laid by the Founder Director, Late Prof. Mukund Lal due to which the institute has carved out a niche amongst its peers across India.
At the end of the inaugural session few cultural programmes were also presented. The inaugural function witnessed the musical and mesmerizing cultural performances by the students of SMS. The students cheered the performers with full enthusiasm, zeal and verve. The inaugural session was coordinated by Mrs. Pallavi Pathak while the vote of thanks was presented by Mr. Sandeep Singh, Convenor Adharshila-2014.
The four events included the one academic event Business Quiz and three cultural events Solo Song, Antyakshari and Solo Dance.
The participating teams included IMS Shepa, Varanasi, Vasantha College for Women, Varanasi, Faculty of Commerce, BHU, United Institute of Management, Allahabad, Faculty of Management Studies, BHU, Sunbeam College for Women, Varanasi, F.M.T. Harishchandra P. G. College, Varanasi, Kashi IT, Varanasi, Raj School of Management & Sciences, Varanasi, SAMS, Varanasi, Ashoka Institute of Technology & Management, Varanasi, to name a few.
Employee of SMS were felicitated from the management of SMS Society for giving their uninterrupted ‘TEN’ & ‘FIFTEEN’ years of service to the Institution.
In the evening, the winners were awarded with the certificates and the trophies. After the Valedictory function, a sizzling and mesmerizing musical performance was given by the Musical Group OHM and Tanmay (Saregamapa Little Champ Runner up). They presented the Indian traditional and contemporary fusion.
Later, the Executive Secretary of SMS Group of Institutions, Dr. M. P. Singh and Prof. P. N. Jha, Director, SMS felicitated the Chief Guest with a shawl and memento. Mr. Sanjay Gupta, faculty members, members of the administrative staff and students were present on the occasion.
He gave the examples of Steve Jobs, Larry Paige and Bill Gates while elaborating on the Generation of Baby Boomers who changed the business scenario in USA. Shri Desai said that India has an advantage of Demographic Dividend, whereby more than 50 crores of young population in the world resides. Therefore the next 20 years belong to the present day students. He further reiterated that Next Google like phenomenon may happen in India.
Mr. Desai also appreciated the unique contribution of SMS Varanasi and C-SHE (Centre for Sprituality and Human Enrichment) towards providing Moral and ethical soul to management education and said that this kind of education will provide an edge to the institution and the students of this institution in the time to come.
Shri. Sanjay Pugalia, Editor-in-Chief, CNBC Awaaz, Mumbai enlightened the students about the emerging sectors such as Infrastructure, Consultancy, Financial Services, Real Estate which have huge potentials in the city like Varanasi.
He also advised students to find the gaps, recognize the potentials and exploit them as an entrepreneur. He also told students not to worry and be stressed but work hard even if one is working in high pressure profiles like sales.
The hard work and learning in the initial two years of work decides the destinity. He also urged students to travel a lot when undergoing their professional courses as it develops the learning experiences and to get the habit of thinking outside the box.
Shri Viral Doshi,renowned Education Counselor and Director, Viral J. Doshi Associates, Mumbai answered the queries of students regarding the viable options they should consider while making a maiden attempt to enter the corporates. Shri Doshi corrected many misconceptions students generally make and made them understand that the importance of work life balance.
