Tech Series – 2017 held at SMS Varanasi

Livewire Technical Club of SMS Varanasi recently organized “Tech Series – 2017”. More than 165 students of BCA and MCA courses of institute participated in the competition held on 30th October, 2017. Venue of the event was computer center of the institute. It had following four competitive events:

    1. Techno Quiz Victor
    1. Code troubleshooter
    1. Code Debugger
    1. Web spider

Students passed through due registration process and thereafter participated in the event as per below mentioned schedule-

    1. Techno Quiz Victor : 11:10 AM – 11:40 AM (30 Minutes)
    1. Code troubleshooter : 11:55 AM – 12:25 PM (30 Minutes)
    1. Code Debugger : 01:00 PM – 01:30 PM (30 Minutes)
    1. Web spider : 01:50 PM – 03:50 PM (2 Hours)

Techno Quiz Victor was an online quiz event in which participants found a set of 40 questions to be answered them within 30 minutes time. Questions were based on IT fundamentals and programming basics. Only individual Participation was allowed.

Code Troubleshooter was an online code troubleshooting event in which participants got 20 program codes based on C/C++/Java and they were to find errors in them within 30 minutes. Group participation was allowed (two students in a group).

Code Debugger Participants got 5 erroneous programs with their objectives, based on C/C++/Java/ JavaScript and they had to do corrections in programs in such a way that stated objective can be met. Participation had to be in groups only (two in each group).

Web Spider had involvement of a web template based on HTML/CSS/JavaScript and they had to modify/convert it effectively for the announced topic. Participation had to be in groups only (two in each).

Mr. Ram Gopal Gupta was the coordinator of the event. He organized the event with faculty and staff members including Mr. S.S. Srivastava, Mr. V. C. Sharma, Mr. Debprio Banerjee and Mr. Sushil Singh.

Startups Business Model Contest-3 at SMS, Varanasi


Startups Business Model Contest-3 was organized by Centre for Entrepreneurship, Innovation & Skill Development (CEISD) – A Centre of Excellence of School of Management Sciences, Varanasi on 28th October, 2017. Students from various UG & PG courses participated in the contest with great zeal and vigor. A total of 15 Business Models were presented in the final round of the event.

The contest was judged by an esteemed panel of jury which included Prof. K. K. Agrawal, Head- Faculty of Commerce, Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, Er. Amitabh Singh – MD, Sorreal Systems (P) Ltd & Secretary –Varanasi Management Association (Ex-President, Eastern UP Exporters Association.), Dr. Navin Kr. Rai, MD, Bio Mantra and Mr. Ajai Suman Shukla, Deshpande Foundation (India) to evaluate and select best of the best talent who qualified the preliminary round held earlier this month.

Earlier in his welcome address, Prof. Raj Kumar Singh (Chairperson-CEISD) extended a very welcome to the judges & participants and advocated the importance of entrepreneurship in the today’s complex competitive environment.

During his address Prof K. K. Agrawal expressed that practicality in thinking is very important as sustainability can only be assured through practical thinking. He also emphasized on the importance of participation and continuous growth. Later on in his deliberation he also emphasized on the viability of any project in current market scenario. He also congratulated all the students who have secured rank as well as those who have participated in the event

Further Dr. Navin Kr. Rai guided student to have market check of any business idea as many ideas fail due to this. He also suggested student to focus on realistic funding aspect of any business, without which any business can’t run. Further he also offered funding to one of the project and assured that he is going to support that business to run.

Later on Er. Amitabh Singh in his deliberation motivated student to participate in this type of events. He also suggested student to become job creator to become job seeker. This type of contest is going help student to tackle real life situations. He also offered funding to award winning business ideas and suggested that we should incubate atleast one business idea every year as a part of business model contest.

During his address Mr. Ajai Suman Shukla praised student and gave individual feedback. He also suggested student to build entrepreneurial attitude as it is not only going to help in building business but it is also going to help in building any organization. He offered student to join him to build entrepreneurial attitude.

The contest was concluded with the blessings by Prof. P. N. Jha (Director, SMS Varanasi) who extended his gratitude to the judges of the event and threw light on the importance of entrepreneurship in the today’s complex & competitive environment. He also added that such contests are the essence of Management Education in any B-Schools. Sir also expressed his happiness & congratulated various stakeholders on institute’s NAAC Accreditations as an “A” Grade Institute.

The results were announced by Prof. P. N. Jha (Director, SMS Varanasi). The session was conducted by Mr. Saurabh Kumar Srivastava (Assistant Professor & Co-coordinator-MBA) and Mr. Kartikeya Singh (Coordinator-MBA) proposed the formal vote of thanks to all the participant & judges.

The winners of the contest will receive their respective prices on the institute’s 23rd Foundation Day, i.e. ADHARSHILA-2017 on 10th, November, 2017 as below:-

SMS Varanasi Organized Panel Discussion in Association with VMA


School of Management Sciences, Varanasi in association with Varanasi Management Association organized a Panel Discussion on the topic “Current Indian Economic Scenario: Issue & Challenges” in the campus of SMS Varanasi on 25th October, 2017.

Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Lalit Narayan Mishra (LNM) University, Bhagalpur, Prof. S.K. Singh was Chief Guest of the programme. During his inaugural speech Hon’ble V.C. Prof S.K. Singh presented an optimistic view of Indian economy, which is undergoing in a transition phase. He appreciated the government’s recent steps to reform Indian economy. He supported the idea that the impact of demonetization & G.S.T. can be slow but surely will be positive in near future. Prof. Singh compared that education is like a tree where roots denote primary education, stems symbolize secondary education and branches demonstrate higher education. For a strong tree, it is necessary to nourish root i.e. basic education must be taken care by society. Hon’ble V.C. Congratulated Varanasi Management Association & SMS Varanasi for organizing such event.

Earlier welcoming the chief guest, the director of the institute & Vice-President of VMA, Prof. P.N. Jha shared his views about current Indian economic scenario and mentioned the recent events of Indian economy. Prof. Alok Kumar in his speech, draws ulterior view of Indian economy and pointed out the significance of ecological issues of economy. Prof. Sandeep Singh presented positive aspect of Indian economy and recent reforms including demonization and GST. He supported the reforms and revolutionary steps by the government of India. He mentioned that due to demonetization at least, now all the money in circulation is accounted and G.S.T. will also play significant role in enhancing the tax net. Further, these steps will have a long term positive effect on Indian economy.

Vote of the thanks was given by Program Convener Prof. R. K. Singh and the programme was coordinated by Shri Saurabh Srivastava. On this occasion, Executive Secretary Dr. M.P. Singh, Registrar Mr. Sanjay Gupta, Prof. Kamalsheel Mishra, Dr. Anupam Shukla, Shri Rishi Raman Singh, Dr. Avinash Chandra Supkar, Shri S.S. Srivastava and Shri Amitabh Pandey also shared their views.

SMS Mental Ability Recognition Test (SMART) – 2017 @ SMS Varanasi


School of Management Sciences (SMS) Varanasi, as in previous years, organized SMS Mental Ability Recognition Test (abbreviated as SMART) on Sunday, 15th October, 2017, where more than Eleven Hundred students participated from more than 25 schools across Varanasi and few from Bhadohi and Sonebhadra districts. This Annual competition is organized every year involving school students for creating awareness about emerging competitive environment and dimensions, to make the participants understand about their local positioning in the peer group, to secure financial assistance for higher studies at SMS in the form of scholarships and to highlight their institution by winning prizes.

In such an event, it was Harshit Tiwari (Central Hindu Boys School, Varanasi) who secured the highest 88 per cent marks in the Online test thereby winning a cash prize of Rs. 15 thousand along with a trophy and Certificate. The second position was captured by Aditya Kumar (Central Hindu Boys School, Varanasi) with 85.33 per cent marks while the third spot was taken by Satyen Pandey (St. Johns School Marhauli, Varanasi) with 84 per cent score. They were given a cash prize of Rs. 10 and 5 thousand respectively by the Director of SMS Varanasi, Prof. P. N. Jha.

Others who won the consolation prizes include Khushi Singh (Green View Public School, Bhadohi), Vidhu Singh Kaushik (International Hindu School, Varanasi), Rahul Ravi (St. Atulanand Convent School, Varanasi), Ankit Kumar (Central Hindu Boys School, Varanasi), Harshika Bhardwaj (Central Hindu Girls School, Varanasi), Palak Mishra (St. Johns Marhauli, Varanasi), Mihir Kumar Srivastava (Dayawati Modi Academy, Ramnagar).

The Programme also witnessed a career couselling session by an expert from Delhi, Mr. Manish Raj Sharma (MRS Training Services, New Delhi). The Programme was conducted by Dr. Avinash Chandra Supkar (Associate Professor, SMS) and Mr. Rohit Mehta (Assistant Professor, SMS). The Vote-of-thanks was presented by the Registrar Mr. Sanjay Gupta. Senior Manager (Marketing & Branding) Mr. Pankaj Srivastava along with his team members Mr. Vishal Rai and Mr. Yogesh Singh were also present in the programme.

National Conference on “Information Technology for Innovative Business Practices” @ SMS Varanasi


Two Days National conference on “Information Technology for Innovative Business Practices” held at SMS Varanasi on 7th & 8th October, 2017. Noted academician, author of several world class books in Computing, Prof. E. Balaguruswamy, Former Vice Chancellor, Anna University inaugurated the National Conference at School of Management Sciences, Varanasi. He exhorted the youth of the country to come forward and innovate to make the country move faster towards ‘developed’ category shedding the seven decade old ‘developing’ tag. Addressing the gathering of over a hundred participants from various parts of the country, he said that Innovation is an integral part of life.


He discussed about the state of affairs of the Indian education and brought out the fact that even the pioneer Universities of India are not there in the top-notch world Institutions list. It happened because they did not innovate, he added. Citing further, he said that on almost all socio-economic parameters, India is lagging behind and this is true because India lacked in the area of Innovation. In case of absence of creativity and innovation, India is likely to remain ‘developing for the next three to four decades’, he added. He further said that we also need to create people with competence and character. India can be developed by only students and teachers, not by politicians, he said. Further, our innovation and that too IT-enabled must produce goods and services for the benefit of the common man or the society at large. He cited few examples of Tirupur, Sivakasi and Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu where traditional business have disappeared because of lack of innovation and Chinese and Malaysian products have flooded the market. He added, today Data is the most useful resource for everyone and we should have the curiosity and idea to use it in the most productive way.

it_seminor_17_3The Guest of Honour of the Conference, Dr. Lalit Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist, BARC-Mumbai, highlighted the fact how Conference platforms can be used to discuss Research and Innovations which need to have societal impact. Earlier, the Director of SMS Varanasi, Prof. P.N. Jha welcomed the Guests and participants of the Conference.
The Conference Convenor, Prof. K. S. Mishra presented the theme while the Vote of thanks for the inaugural session was presented by the Organizing Secretary, Shri S. S. Srivastava. Dr. Pallavi Pathak coordinated the inaugural session. On this occasion, the Conference Souvenir and the 24th issue of the Institute’s pioneer International research journal ‘Management Insight’ were released. Later the Guests were honoured by Prof P.N. Jha by presenting shawl and memento.

The two-day event is witnessing around 50 paper presentations on contemporary issues related to Conference themes. The Valedictory Guest would be Prof. S. K. Kak, Former VC, MMTU-NOIDA, on the second day interacted with the audience. During the Conference, Registrar Shri Sanjay Gupta, Executive Secretary Dr. M.P. Singh and faculty members were also present apart from some students from different Universities and colleges around India.

Case Chase Contest – 3 @ SMS Varanasi


A “Case Chase Contest – 3” was organized at SMS Varanasi campus on September 22, 2017 by CEISD – A Centre of Excellence of School of Management Sciences, Varanasi. Students from various courses participated with great vigor and zeal. 31 case studies related to different dimensions of Marketing, Finance, HR, Strategic Management etc. were presented by the participating students. Cases of Blackberry, Tata Nano, Air India, IPL, UID-Aadhar, KFC, LML, Reliance Jio, Starbucks, Idea-Vodaphone Merger etc. were discussed in the forum.

The contest was judged by an esteemed panel of jury which included Prof. K. K. Agrawal, Head- Faculty of Commerce (Former Head and Dean-Faculty of Commerce and Management, MGKVP), Prof. H.S. Asthana -Department of Psychology, Banaras Hindu University & Mr.Ashish Kumar Tiwari – Head, Institute of Company Secretaries of India, Varanasi Chapter.

During his address Prof K. K. Agrawal said that Case studies provide a means for highlighting and extracting practical principles and methods for shaping and accelerating progress in solving complex real world problems. He also emphasized on the importance of presenter’s convincing attitude while giving the presentations. He also emphasized on the importance of participation and continuous growth. Later in his speech he also highlighted the importance of Cases in corporate structure.

Prof. H.S. Asthana said that case studies inform burgeoning theories such as those associated with complex systems engineering where people are considered part of the system to be conceived, developed, fielded, and operated; or extant systems targeted for improvement upgrades. Furthermore he added the importance of R&D and humanistic approach in case solving.

Mr. Ashish Kumar Tiwari added the importance of cases in Corporate Life. These cases are going to help budding managers to tackle real life situation in the corporate. According to him this is the only way to keep acquainted with the corporate strategy making which in turn help the managers to plan things in advance.

SMS B.Com Students Secured Gold and Silver Medals in University Merit List


School of Management Sciences Varanasi Undergraduate students had again proved their academic forte by attaining their positions in various graduate level programmes (BBA, BCA and B.Com) affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith (MGKVP) University, Varanasi. Ms. Riddhi Singh of B.Com course has grabbed Gold Medal, as she topped in the University Merit list of B.Com Programme followed by Mr. Rishi Narayan Singh who is entitle for Silver Medal as he attained second position in the University Merit list. Further Mr. Utkarsh Varshney of BBA course has also secured place in top ten list of MGKVP and Mr. Anshumaan of BCA course has also acquired place in top ten Merit list of MGKVP, Varanasi.
