SMS, Varanasi celebrates it’s 21st Foundation Day ‘ADHARSHILA-2015’


School of Management Sciences (SMS), Varanasi completed two decades of its existence on Kashi’s soil and the occasion was celebrated with great vigor and zeal by the entire SMS fraternity on 21st November, 2015. A series of competitive events and cultural program was organized on the day.
Inaugurating the function, the Commissioner (Varanasi Division) Shri Nitin Ramesh Gokarn said that it was heartening to note the way SMS shapes the youth energy. He asked the young generation to stop running after jobs and become a magnet to attract talent through entrepreneurship. He also asked the students to go for internships at Varanasi Development Authority, Varanasi Nagar Nigam and other local government bodies and suggest mechanisms to improve the state of affairs of the city. He said the institution is moving towards adulthood and the fact that Indian population comprises of 65 % youth makes it imminent to become role model for others.

Presiding over the function, the Vice Chancellor of MGKV, Prof. Prithvish Nag said that the future of SMS is very bright and it is the right time to venture into newer vocational courses as the Institute not only has the academic infrastructure but also innovative ways to take lead in this segment. He said he was happy to note that SMS students have been performing their best in University examinations and was hopeful that the trend would continue. In his welcome address the Director of the Institute, Prof. P. N. Jha elaborated the achievements of the Institute in the past two decades and attributed the same to the vision of the legendry Founder Director Late Prof. Mukund Lal.

In a rare event, SMS Varanasi honored its 13 employees for rendering their uninterrupted services for 20, 15 and 10 years to the Institution. It is amazing to find that five of them have been here since inception of the Institution, they include the Registrar Shri Sanjay Gupta, Librarian Smt. Pratima Bhargava, Accountant Shri Shantanu Mukherji, Driver Shri Harish Kumar Yadav and Cleaner Smt Shakuntala Devi. For completing fifteen years of their exemplary services to SMS, three faculty members, Dr. Alok Kumar (Professor and Dean R&D), Shri Krishna Kant Bajpai (Associate Prof.) and Shri Anand Prakash Dube (Assistant Prof.) and three staff members Shri PB Singh (Project Manager), Shri Grijesh Singh Gautam (Assistant Librarian) and Shri Rajesh Kumar Gupta (Grade-IV staff) find place in honour list. Further the Director Prof Pinak Nath Jha too has completed a decade of his association with SMS for which he has been honoured. Electrician Shri Ramesh Kumar too was felicitated for completing ten years at SMS Varanasi. The honours were done by Shri SK Singh, Dr. MP Singh during the evening after culmination of the day-long programme.

The teams participating include FMS-BHU, Faculty of Commerce-BHU, MPMIR-BHU, MGKV, FMT-HCPG College, IMS-SHEPA, Vasantha College for Women, Sunbeam College for Women, Ashoka, SAMS, Ambition, Dhirendra Mahila PG College amongst prominent ones in addition to the host teams from SMS Varanasi and sister Institution SMS Technical Campus, Lucknow. The six competitive events included Solo Song, Solo Dance, Antyakshari, Ad-Making & Rangoli, Photography and Business Quiz.

At the end of the competitive events a electrifying performance was given by renowned singer Mr.Shreekant Krishnamurthy. He presented blend of classical and bollywood songs and compelled the crowd to dance.

The Programme was coordinated by Mrs. Pallavi Pathak (Assistant Professor) while the Vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. K. S. Mishra (Dean-CS). The winners were given prizes and certificates by the Director.

Business Model Contest at SMS, Varanasi


A Business Model Contest was organized at SMS, Varanasi on 20th November, 2015 for the students of PGDM and MBA students. Students from both the programs participated in the contest with great zeal and vigor. A total of 14 Business Models were presented in the event.

Earlier during his welcome address Prof.P.N Jha (Director, SMS-Varanasi) extended a very welcome to the guests and advocated the importance of entrepreneurship in the today’s complex competitive environment. He also said that such contests are the essence of Management Education in any B-School.


Dignitaries present on the occasion were Shri Yogendra Singh – DGM, Union Bank of India, Prof.S K Singh- Ex-Head & Dean FMS-BHU, Prof.PK Mishra, Department of Chemical Engineering &Secretary & Coordinator, Malviya Center of Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship, IIT-BHU, and Er.Amitabh Singh – MD, Sorreal Systems (P) Ltd & Ex-President, Eastern UP Exporters Association.

During his address Mr.Yogendra Kumar (DGM, Union Bank of India-FGMO Varanasi) praised and remarked the business models and on behalf of Union Banks of India, he was ready to fund some of the business models. He also said that these types of contests develop a bundle of entrepreneurial skills in the students. He also presented his individual analysis of all the business plans individually and focused on the feasibility and viability of the projects.

Prof.P.K Mishra who takes care of Incubation & Entrepreneurship at BHU was highly impressed by the presentation of different business models reiterated that few of the projects can be implemented with immediate effect.

On the occasion, the top management of the institute including Executive Secretary Dr.M.P Singh, Registrar, Shri Sanjay Gupta and other senior faculty members were present to boost the morale of the students.

SMS Alumni Association – Eighth Annual Alumni Meet of Varanasi Chapter

IMG_8320SMS Varanasi organized its Eighth Annual Alumni Meet on 20th Nov 2015 in Varanasi. Venue of the meeting, SMS Varanasi Campus, witnessed the presence of more than hundred Alumnus from different batches and courses including PGDM, MBA, MCA, BBA, BCA and B.Com.


The Alumni meet commenced with a welcome note by Director of the institute Prof. P. N. Jha. He appreciated the Alumni members for their support in earlier years towards placement of students.


A brief presentation about the recent activities and exhibition of corporate film of SMS Group was made by Mr. Shardul Shankar, student PGDM. Thereafter Alumni members were informed about the different milestones achieved by the institution in the recent past including the awards and accolades from the industry and academia. Information about various academic agreements with the various international institutions of repute was also communicated to the Alumni members.


Earlier welcoming the guests, Convener of SMS Alumni Association Mr. Amitabh Pandey along with Coordinator of Alumni Association Mr. Rohit Mehta interacted with the aluminous. They discussed the issues related to the challenges regarding industry- academia interface and the ways to handle the growing demands of the corporate.


Members also interacted in ceremonial manner of SMS Alumni Association followed by open house discussion on issues such as future expectations of the industry and how to educate and coach the future management aspirants to successfully meet the demand- supply gap existing in the corporate.


All the Alumni members were felicitated in the meeting by presenting the mementos. The event ended with the promise to re union again in next year.

SMS Mental Ability Recognition Test (SMART)-2015


School of Management Sciences (SMS), Varanasi on Sunday, 01st November, 2015 organised an Online aptitude test named SMS Mental Ability Recognition Test (SMART) for the intermediate students to identify the potential talent existing in the city, with an intention to hone their skills depending on the aptitude of the candidate. 800 students from 25 schools of Varanasi and adjacent areas of Purvanchal participated in the event. The prominent schools included St. John’s School (DLW, Madauli and Ledhupur), Little Flower House, CHS (Boys and Girls), W.H. Smith School, Atulanand Convent School, Gurunanak Convent School, KDK Kanodia Convent School, Renukoot, St. Francis etc. were to name a few.

The Director of SMS, Varanasi, Prof. P. N. Jha in his inaugural address welcomed and exhorted the participants and said that youth are the future leaders of the nation and they should appear in competitive examinations organised by different forums to improve their competitive Efficiency. The improved efficiency will help them to improve their skills and competencies required to excel professional quality and fullfill their social responsibility towards nation.


Later, the awards (which included cash prizes, trophies and certificates) were distributed by him in the Valedictory Session. The first prize of Rs. 15,000/- was won by Mr. Prashant Tripathi of St. Johns School, DLW, Varanasi while the second and third prizes of Rs. 10,000/- and 5,000/- were won by Aditya Chakraborty and Shraddha Kishan Tripathi of Little Flower House, Varanasi and C.H.S. Boys School, Kamachha, Varanasi respectively .

There were seven consolation prizes of Rs. 2,500/- each were given to Devansh Saraswat, Amit Kumar Singh & Kundan Kumar (All CHS Boys School, Varanasi), Arpit Asthana & Arpit Singh (both St. John’s School DLW, Varanasi), Shashwat Khare (WH Smith School, Varanasi) and Shreyansh Agrawal (St. Johns Marhauli, Varanasi). Present on the occasion were the Executive Secretary congratulated the students and organising committe for the Successfulcompletion of the event. During the event Dr. Sandeep Singh and Dr. Avinash Supkar councelled the students about the various hurdles and opportunites of the future and enlightened their path to success. The event was coordinated by Mr. Rohit Mehta (Assistant Professor, SMS). The Vote of thanks was proposed by Shri Sanjay Gupta, Registrar of the Institute.
