Amidst a high-profile gathering of Academicians and Industry people along with honourable ministers at Vivanta, Taj, Lucknow, the Executive Secretary of SMS Society Dr. M. P. Singh was honoured with National UP Education and Excellence Awards 2014 for best Edupreneur in the state in the UP Technical Education Summit 2014 for Excellence through skill development and outcome based Education & Innovation. The programme was supported by the UP Technical University, Lucknow, the AICTE, AIU, NIELIT (DOEACC) Government of India, MSME etc.
Those present on the occasion included Shri Shiv Kant Ojha, Minister of Technical Education, UP, Shri Abhishek Mishra, Minister of State for Vocational Education & Skill Development, UP, Shri Manoj Kumar Pandey, Minister of Science and Technology UP and Shri Ram Sakal Gurjar, Minister of State for Technical Education, Shri Alok Ranjan, Chief Secretary UP, Prof. R. K. Khandal (Vice Chancellor UPTU), Prof. P. B. Sharma (Vice Chancellor Amity University), Shri Sushil Ansal (Chairman Ansal Group), Shri D. K. Modi (Chairman Modi Group), Shri Nikhil Buran (Enterprise Business Manager HP Networking, India).
SMS Society established the School of Management Sciences, Varanasi in the year 1995 under the stewardship of Late Prof. Mukund Lal, a renowned management personality with the flagship PGDM programme which is now 20 years old. The Institution since then has added other professional programmes like BBA, BCA, MCA, MBA and B. Com. (at Varanasi). In the year 2008, the Lucknow campus started with the B. Tech. programmes along with the BBA, BCA and B. Com. Programmes which were later added. The Group now commands leadership in management and Engineering education not only across the state but nationally too. The Group has academic tie-ups with Universities in the USA, Hungary and Brazil. Overall around three thousand students are studying in the group.
SMS is known for an excellent industry-academia interface, excellent placement, up-to-date resource base and innovative pedagogy to make the students better suited for the current corporate environment. SMS students have always been in the University merit lists year after year. SMS is known for blending modern education with human values and spiritualism, a rare feat for any institution in India. It is the intellectual power house with more than 100 top class faculty moulding the students’ future.
The 3 day International Conference (22nd to 24th Nov 2014) on Spirituality: The Essence of Ethical Leadership & Management started on 22nd November, 2014 in SMS-Varanasi. The conference was organized by Centre for Spirituality and Human Enrichment (C-SHE, SMS, Varanasi) in association with Claflin University, USA.
The inaugural ceremony on Day 1 (22nd Nov) started with lighting of lamp. Dignitaries present at the occasion were Prof. R K Khandal, Vice-Chancellor UPTU-Lucknow (Chief Guest), Prof.A D N Bajpai , Vice-Chancellor Himachal Pradesh University-Shimla (President of the Function), Dr.M P Singh , Executive Secretary – SMS Varanasi, Prof.P.N N Jha , Director- SMS Varanasi, Prof.B P Singh , Chairman DSPSR, Prof. S K Singh, ICCR Chair-professor, University of Pokhra-Nepal & Mr.Sandeep Singh , Conference Convener.
During his welcome address, Prof P N Jha (Director SMS-Varanasi) extended a very warm welcome to the dignitaries and enlightened the forum with importance of Spirituality in leadership and management. Further the convener of the conference Shri.Sandeep Singh threw some light on the concept of spirituality incorporating the virtues of Tyag,Kshama and Seva.
Later on Prof S.K Singh discussed the importance of spirituality in balancing self and professional attitude in consideration of economic development. He further advocated the inculcation of leadership and spirituality in student through higher education.
Later in the session Prof B.P Singh discussed the importance humanity apart from professional development. He also emphasized that Mind, Body and Soul should be aligned in order to attain spirituality. He further discussed the 3 P’s of spirituality-Profit, People and Planet, how they are interlinked and important for spirituality.
During his presidential address Prof ADN Bajpai presented the analysis of mind-body economics. He also stressed on creating an environmental balance through spirituality by developing self ethics apart from government initiatives.
Concluding the session Prof.R.K Khandal emphasized that once we get the virtue of ‘BHAAV’ and ‘PRABHAAV”, the spirit behind doing a work we attain spirituality. He further added that good deeds always lead towards right path and achieving spirituality.
SMS journals (Management Insight and Computing Trendz) were released along with the Souvenir of the conference.
Finally Dr.MP Singh presented the guests with shawl and memento as token of love and remembrance. Vote of thanks was given Shri.Sandeep Singh.
In the first Plenary Session conducted by Mr.Avinash Chandra Supkar, the first Speaker Mr.Vipul Mathur (VP-HR, Mahindra SSG) presented his views on spirituality in management for decision making and discussed the model of implementation.
Further in the plenary session Prof Sanjoy Mukharjee (IIM-Shillong) discussed the two forces of ‘Silence’ and ‘Speech’. He emphasized that the welfare of public should be carried out without expectations, as feeling of prime beneficiary is above all.
In Plenary Session II conducted by Mr.Ashish Kumar Tiwari, the first keynote speaker Prof P.K Mukhopadhyay (Ex-Head, Dept. of Philosophy Jadavpur University) discussed the importance of cultural and scientific integration for development of spiritualism. He further added that narrowing self inters can lead to spirituality and economic growth.
Further in Plenary Session,Gurushree (founder of Rudra Universe Foundation-Mumbai) discussed the four parts of mind(chakravarti) i.e. Manas,Chitta,Ahankaar and Buddhi.She further reiterated that managing money needs totalitarian mind. She advocated that is it beyond the mind that consciousness takes place.
Finally in the technical session 10 papers were presented on the theme of Work Place Spirituality and Spirituality the pillar of true education.
2nd Day of the conference started with the Plenary Session III. In the very starting of the session Prof.Rana P B Singh(Head, Dept of Geography-BHU) discussed about the geographical aspects of Varanasi and said that the oldest living city of the world ‘Banaras’ is very scientifically planned in accordance with religious aspects. Temples Mosques and other religious monuments are so planned that they emit positivity and peace of mind.
Later in the session Prof B P Singh (Chairman DSPSR) focused on the impact of spirituality on effective leadership and decision making. He further added that proper co-ordination between mind, heart and body leads to spirit and open the way towards spiritualism.
Concluding the Plenary session III, Prof V N Giri (IIT, Kharagpur) discussed the importance of self realization, self actualization and self esteem for proper business management. He further emphasized on development of humanistic organization under which human values are preferred and which leads to the achievement of personal and professional excellence.
Plenary Session IV started with the address of Prof A N Tripathi, he focused on inner ethical values for social development. He further emphasized on the development of interconnected society rather than the materialistic one.
In the mid of the session Mr.Navneet Sikera (IPS,IG Lucknow) enlightened the forum with the importance of ethical conduct and moral values and their proper co-ordination in day to day life. He further explained some real life experiences which leads to the development of inner consciousness and spirituality.
Concluding the session Mr. T Chandrashekhar Rao (Director –Operations, Foster Wheeler India Pvt.Ltd) focused on core values and leadership lessons from GITA.He said that guiding and delegating are the very foundation of principle centered leadership.
Finally in the Technical Session II and III more than 50 papers were presented on the theme of SPRITUAL BELIFES AND EFFECT OF SPRITUALITY ON HUMAN PERFORMANCE.
Third and last day of conference started with the plenary session V. In the very starting of the session Prof Rajeev Ranjan (Sampoornanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi) said that essential of Indian philosophy like Dharma,Karma,Vedas are of relevance in the present business scenario. He also said that the spirituality is knowing oneself to be in oneself.
Concluding the session Mr VK Jha (DGM,Punjab National Bank) differentiated spirituality from religion and said that man’s spiritual and moral values help him in attaining perfection.
The Chief Guest of the Valedictory Session of the International Conference “Spirituality: The Essence of Ethical Leadership and Management” , Prof. P. Nag (Vice Chancelor, MGKVP, Varanasi) said that Spirituality is
Common to all religions. Presenting on Geography, Culture and Spirituality, he stated that the geography of the place governs the cultural which in turn governs the spirituality. India is a classic example of spiritual unity in cultural diversity.
Prof. Prithvish Nag stated that Indian cultural heritage has flourished Indian Cultural and Spiritual Life. He also opined that India is a laboratory of culture and values which should be explored. The objectives of Cultural spiritual conscious is to bring people together.
The Guest of Honor in the Valedictory Session, Prof. K. D. Tripathi (Advisor, IGNCA) stressed on the need for a dialogue between ancient tradition of spirituality and the Youngest branch of the modern science i.e. management, which has a bearing for the entire world. He also emphasized on the need to have the Human Face of Capitalism by subscribing to Indian World View – man for nature and nature for man. Prof. K. D. Tripathi
advocated the need for a forgoing dialogue between modern, scientific contemporary knowledge and ancient Indian traditional knowledge which wil bring rewarding future not only for India but also to the entire world.
Conclusion of the 3 day seminar was presented Mr.Vijay Verma (Asst.Professor SMS,Varanasi) On this occasion, the nine students of BA and BCA programme of MGKVP, Varanasi who emerged as top performers in the University Examinations were also honored by the Institute.
At the end of the session guests were felicitated by Dr M P Singh (Executive Secretary-SMS, Varanasi).

Continuing with its tradition of producing Top rankers in the University Merit list , SMS Varanasi has once again set a new benchmark by securing highest number of positions in the merit list of Top 10 BBA & BCA students declared by Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi for the session 2014.
While six of the Top Ten positions in BBA Merit list have been grabbed by SMS Varanasi students , the First , Second and Third Rank holders in BBA Programme belong to SMS Varanasi.
Similarly three of the Top Ten Positions in BCA Merit List have been grabbed by SMS Varanasi students , Second Position Holder in BCA Programme belongs to SMS Varanasi.

A work shop on Investor Awareness was organized by Security Exchange Board Of India (SEBI) at SMS, Varanasi on 14th Nov 2012 for MBA 3rd and PGDM 3rd Semester students. Work shop focused on providing the investors with the knowledge of investments and to safeguard them from illegal schemes. Dignitaries present on the occasion were Mr.Naveen Sharma (AGM-SEBI,Lucknow) and Mr.Arun Kumar Shukla (Manager SEBI,Lucknow).
The session specifically focused on safeguarding the investor’s interest against Ponzi schemes which are not registered with SEBI and are treated illegal. Guidance was provided to the young management professional to be a smart and educated investor.
School of Management Sciences (SMS), Varanasi completed its 19 years of existence on November 10, 2014. The Institution celebrated its 20th Foundation Day “Adharshila” amidst joyous fervor and competitive spirit with over 15 teams participating in the day long competitive events covering four events in academic and cultural arenas. A traditional ‘puja’ was performed at the Campus in the early morning hours before the arrival of the Chief Guest. The Chief Guest in the inaugural session was Shri Narad Rai, Hon’ble Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, Uttar Pradesh Government, Lucknow.
Inaugurating the day-long event “Adharshila 2014” at SMS Campus, Shri Narad Rai, Hon’ble Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, Uttar Pradesh Government, Lucknow said that students should prepare themselves to take on the world market instead of inviting them to our country. One should think of staying in India and serving the citizens by acquiring a career from institution like School of Management Sciences (SMS), Varanasi.
The presidential address was made by Dr. O. P. Kejriwal, Former Information Commissioner of India, who said that management skills are required everywhere. There should be a balance between personal life and career and hence the students must manager their lives in such a way that it is meaningful.
Welcoming the Guests to the function, the Director of SMS, Varanasi, Prof. P. N. Jha said that it is a momentous occasion for the entire SMS family and it is only due to the well wishes of all its stake holders from time to time owing to which SMS has made a mark at the international level.
He welcomed the Chief Guest to the Campus and hoped that under his stewardship, not only the U. P. Technical University but also SMS family would perform excellently in providing value based education. He remembered the strong foundation laid by the Founder Director, Late Prof. Mukund Lal due to which the institute has carved out a niche amongst its peers across India.
At the end of the inaugural session few cultural programmes were also presented. The inaugural function witnessed the musical and mesmerizing cultural performances by the students of SMS. The students cheered the performers with full enthusiasm, zeal and verve. The inaugural session was coordinated by Mrs. Pallavi Pathak while the vote of thanks was presented by Mr. Sandeep Singh, Convenor Adharshila-2014.
The four events included the one academic event Business Quiz and three cultural events Solo Song, Antyakshari and Solo Dance.
The participating teams included IMS Shepa, Varanasi, Vasantha College for Women, Varanasi, Faculty of Commerce, BHU, United Institute of Management, Allahabad, Faculty of Management Studies, BHU, Sunbeam College for Women, Varanasi, F.M.T. Harishchandra P. G. College, Varanasi, Kashi IT, Varanasi, Raj School of Management & Sciences, Varanasi, SAMS, Varanasi, Ashoka Institute of Technology & Management, Varanasi, to name a few.
Employee of SMS were felicitated from the management of SMS Society for giving their uninterrupted ‘TEN’ & ‘FIFTEEN’ years of service to the Institution.
In the evening, the winners were awarded with the certificates and the trophies. After the Valedictory function, a sizzling and mesmerizing musical performance was given by the Musical Group OHM and Tanmay (Saregamapa Little Champ Runner up). They presented the Indian traditional and contemporary fusion.
Later, the Executive Secretary of SMS Group of Institutions, Dr. M. P. Singh and Prof. P. N. Jha, Director, SMS felicitated the Chief Guest with a shawl and memento. Mr. Sanjay Gupta, faculty members, members of the administrative staff and students were present on the occasion.
He gave the examples of Steve Jobs, Larry Paige and Bill Gates while elaborating on the Generation of Baby Boomers who changed the business scenario in USA. Shri Desai said that India has an advantage of Demographic Dividend, whereby more than 50 crores of young population in the world resides. Therefore the next 20 years belong to the present day students. He further reiterated that Next Google like phenomenon may happen in India.
Mr. Desai also appreciated the unique contribution of SMS Varanasi and C-SHE (Centre for Sprituality and Human Enrichment) towards providing Moral and ethical soul to management education and said that this kind of education will provide an edge to the institution and the students of this institution in the time to come.
Shri. Sanjay Pugalia, Editor-in-Chief, CNBC Awaaz, Mumbai enlightened the students about the emerging sectors such as Infrastructure, Consultancy, Financial Services, Real Estate which have huge potentials in the city like Varanasi.
He also advised students to find the gaps, recognize the potentials and exploit them as an entrepreneur. He also told students not to worry and be stressed but work hard even if one is working in high pressure profiles like sales.
The hard work and learning in the initial two years of work decides the destinity. He also urged students to travel a lot when undergoing their professional courses as it develops the learning experiences and to get the habit of thinking outside the box.
