Abhishek Dubey and Vipul Sharma said their experience has brought them a greater understanding of the American economy and culture. The duo will return to Varanasi, India with professional experience in analyzing sales and marketing.
“We’re very glad to be here at Claflin University as students,” said Dubey.
“I love the way Claflin prepared us as students,” said Sharma. “The classes were very interactive.
Last summer, the exchange partnership began with four Master of Business Administration students coming to Claflin. Then, Claflin Master of Business Administration Director Dr. Benjamin Yumol along with four MBA students visited SMS and other Indian locales this past fall. School of Business Dean Dr. Harpal Grewal said several Claflin students will study in India next semester.
“This partnership between Claflin University and the School of Management Sciences is providing our students with a global perspective,” said Grewal. “As globalization continues to shape the economy, our exchange program will prove mutually invaluable for both Claflin and SMS and our young scholars.”
SMS is located in Varanasi, India, which is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh located in the Northeastern portion of that country. Established in 1995, the institution is known for its innovative management and computer science programs.
As part of their Claflin experience, Dubey and Sharma served a summer internship with Southern Patio, an award-winning national outdoor furniture retailer with a corporate office in Orangeburg. They completed several projects, which included analyzing the demand and sales of all Southern Patio products over a two-year period. The duo also translated sales data for new and potential products to examine their demand. Dubey noted Southern Patio executives were very pleased with their work.
In the classroom, Shasma was very impressed with expertise and professionalism of Claflin’s business faculty.
“I learned so much,” said Dubey. Sharma added, “We gained business knowledge on such a broad spectrum.”
The two marketing majors have divergent career paths. Dubey wants to become an advertising and marketing guru for a top multinational company. Meanwhile, Sharma has designs on becoming an international business professor.
“It will be a challenging job that I will love doing,” Sharma said.
